Impact of Power Cable Eccentricity on Electric Field
As we know, power cables are designed with a cylindrical structure to ensure a uniform electric field distribution. However, in the past, limitations in domestic manufacturing processes often resulted in a deviation of the conductor from the central position. This eccentricity could exceed 8%, leading to a distorted electric field distribution.
When impurities or defects are present within the insulation medium, issues such as mechanical damage can occur, causing a sharp decline in the cable's insulation performance. The presence of moisture or impurities may also trigger partial discharges, ultimately leading to electrical breakdown of the cable.
With continuous technological advancements, the uniformity of cable insulation—specifically, the eccentricity—has been significantly improved. According to relevant reports, eccentricity is now controlled within 5%. This means that eccentricity has been greatly reduced, and its impact on the electric field is essentially negligible.
This also serves as a reminder to manufacturers: during the production of power cables, close attention must be paid to the issue of eccentricity. It should not be neglected under the assumption that it is insignificant.
